a luminous legacy:
Ann Casey Johnstone (1921-2014)
On March 21, 2014, the golf world lost a brilliant star as Ann Casey Johnstone peacefully departed at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst at age 93. Her remarkable journey through golf illuminated two distinct paths—first as an extraordinary amateur player, then as a revered teaching professional whose wisdom shaped generations.
Ann’s amateur career (1941-1963) sparkled with achievement. She claimed the Iowa Women’s Amateur six times and reached the pinnacle of American amateur golf in 1957 when awarded the Dorothy J. Manice trophy. Her collection of championships included the prestigious North-South Championship, Trans-Mississippi, and Western Amateur titles. Perhaps most cherished among her accomplishments was representing the United States on three Curtis Cup teams.
In 1964, Ann gracefully transitioned to teaching at Stephens College, where her coaching brilliance led numerous teams to NCAA championships. Her gift for instruction earned her recognition among Golf Digest’s elite teachers and culminated in her 2004 induction into the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Hall of Fame. She shared her philosophy of the game through co-authoring “Golf, A Positive Approach” and through countless lessons at Pine Needles alongside dear friend Peggy Kirk Bell.
Born on Valentine’s Day 1921 in Mason City, Iowa, Ann’s heart for teaching and love of golf left an indelible mark on the sport. Her legacy lives on through her daughter Jean Ann, granddaughters Lesley and Allison, and the countless students whose lives were forever enriched by her gentle guidance and profound understanding of the game she so cherished.
